National Lightning Safety Awareness Week is June 24-30

Lightning strikes are a leading cause of injury or death from weather-related hazards. To call attention to this, the National Lightning Council, the National Weather Service and their partners initiated National Lightning Safety Awareness Week in 2001. Since then, lightning fatalities in the U.S. have dropped from about 50 per year to approximately 30.

This reduction in fatalities is largely due to the promotion of this weather-safety campaign, the public’s awareness of lightning danger, and people seeking safe shelter when thunderstorms threaten. During National Lightning Safety Awareness Week, the Ohio Committee for Severe Weather Awareness encourages you to learn more about lightning and what to do to protect yourselves and your property before, during and after severe thunderstorms.
